Do root canals hurt?

Root canal treatment is not painful, but the infection in the canal before treatment can be excruciating.

If your Topeka dentist diagnoses you with a root infection in your tooth, chances are you’ve come to our dental office with a dental emergency; untreated root infections can be just that painful!

At this appointment, we anesthetize the area and remove the infection from the canal of your tooth. The tooth interior is then washed with a healing agent and closed temporarily with a temporary filling. At your next visit, we typically finish the treatment with a dental crown—a tooth-shaped cover that restores function to a compromised tooth. It is custom-created to match your smile.

In rare cases, your dentist finds the emerging root infection during a routine checkup. In this case, we provide treatment before the pain and swelling set in.

To lower your risks for root infections and other preventable conditions, be sure to visit your dentist regularly for checkups and professional teeth cleanings.
