When is a root canal necessary?

You need a root canal if bacteria penetrate the chamber of your tooth and cause infection. Common culprits include:

  • Tooth injury
  • Advanced tooth decay
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Lack of dental care

If you need a root canal treatment, you will likely have a toothache and swelling. These will only worsen without intervention from your dentist. A root canal infection is considered a dental emergency in Topeka.

Eliminate Symptoms and Save Your Tooth

Root canal therapy is not painful. Instead, it can end pain and save your tooth by preventing the infection from spreading.

If you need a root canal, the dentist will use local anesthesia to numb the tooth and surrounding tissues. Then, we extract the infection, causing pain and swelling. We irrigate the tooth chamber and temporarily seal it to promote prompt healing. At a future dental visit, we typically cap the tooth with a dental crown to restore structure and stability.

If you have a toothache or increasing sensitivity, it’s crucial to contact our dental team as soon as possible for a diagnosis and treatment.
