Can I eat normally after a root canal treatment?

While you can resume eating normally after a root canal, doing so gradually and following your dentist's recommendations ensures a smooth recovery and long-term success of the treatment.

After a root canal, you must take certain precautions before resuming normal eating. Immediately following the procedure, your mouth may be numb due to local anesthesia. In this case, it's best to refrain from eating until the numbness wears so that you don’t accidentally biting your tongue or cheek.

For a few days after a root canal, your dentist will likely recommend soft foods that require minimal chewing like yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and soup. Conversely, it’s crucial to avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that can irritate the treated area or dislodge the temporary filling if one is placed.

You should avoid chewing with the treated tooth until your dentist has placed a permanent restoration, like a dental crown, to protect the tooth from damage. Of course, if you experience any unusual pain, swelling, or discomfort while eating, contact your dentist immediately for guidance.
